THE EVOLUTION OF WIND TURBINE INSPECTIONS

CASE STUDY l As the part of an inspection company that offers inspection reports as their core product, one employee of the wind turbine inspection division in the energy company ALL NRG tells us about his challenges with inspections and shares an exciting vision for the future.

The data management platform Scopito is used by a lot of drone inspectors around the world. But Scopito is more than “drone software”, and today we’ll be meeting a company that started out using Scopito for drone inspections, but so far is in fact mostly using it for other types of wind turbine inspections.

“…the other divisions of ALL NRG don’t make reports,

they deliver a piece of craftsmanship,

whereas the report,

and giving our assessment –

that’s our product.” Danijel Bogojevic, ALL NRG

The report is the product

All NRG is a company located in Denmark, Northern Europe, with more than 20 years of experience in the on- and offshore energy sector. With their more than 600 employees they have energized more than 90 % of the world’s offshore wind turbines.
We talked to Danijel Bogojevic who is one of the inspectors applying the drone inspection software (Scopito) and asked him how ALL NRG as full-scope energy providers offer value to their clients, and how the software helps creating this value.

ALL NRG is divided into two main fields: Oil & Gas, and Wind. Danijel Bogojevic, who is a Senior Specialist within inspections, explains to us shortly what he is doing in the company:

“Scopito is primarily used by the Inspection division in ALL NRG – the other divisions don’t make reports, they deliver a piece of craftsmanship, whereas the report, and giving our assessment, is our product.”

For ALL NRG, there is a lot of occasions for doing an inspection for a client, one of the most common being the client approaching end of warranty on a wind turbine. Here, the customer requires an impartial assessment of the condition of the asset that they bought from the wind turbine producer, e.g. 5 years ago, so that they know if a repair is needed while the warranty is still valid. This data can then be applied in matters between the buyer and the producer of the turbine. People considering buying a used wind turbine is another example of a type of customer for ALL NRG.

The old days: Creating reports in ‘Word’

Back in the “before-Scopito-software days”, some of the things that Danijel Bogojevic and ALL NRG would use a lot of time on was creating the report, involving tasks like making image sizes fit and uniform:

“Things like this was very time-consuming, and sometimes ended up in platform issues towards the customer. With Scopito it looks the same every time. The software automatically makes sure that the image fits to where it is to be used. Small, practical features like this are a real big help.”

“An extended report”

As for all other companies, bringing down the time spent on different tasks is a high priority – and one thing that this means for ALL NRG’s inspection division is bringing down the time spent on creating their inspection reports.
Right now, something Danijel Bogojevic considers to be a challenge is that it takes ALL NRG as much time creating a report as it takes to do the inspection itself – about a day for each thing. And he is hoping to bring that reporting time down significantly in the future.

With that said, he points out that Scopito has saved ALL NRG a lot of time already. But not only that:

“You could say that Scopito is sort of an extended report for us. We can relatively easily create reports in Scopito, but also, we can give the customer access to the data via Scopito. For example, if we have done several inspections for a client, they can themselves access the data and create their own reports. One person from the client company might need a report on the gear casing, and another person on the blades, so this is a good way to do things.”, Danijel Bogojevic explains, and continues:

“The fact that we use Scopito saves us time. But it also gives us a more concrete – and complete – product to sell. The customers not only get a report, but also the option to get a closer look, also on the pictures that we, the inspectors, haven’t commented on.”

Danijel also points out the high pace and intelligence level of Scopito, for example the advantages of the map function, which is something ALL NRG used to lack in the reports they created. He elaborates:

“The thing is, that it’s not so much the inspection our customers pay for, as it’s the report. And the report delivered with extra data looks a lot better than the self-composed Word-file, when handed to the customer. And it’s clear to see that the software is made by someone who knows the needs of their customer. So, a lot of the added value for us using Scopito consists in us delivering a more professionally appearing product”.

The future of inspections: a quicker pace equals more data security?

When asking Danijel from ALL NRG in what way he sees himself doing inspections going forward, he’s hoping that the software will be able to save him even more time – but maybe more importantly; decrease the risk of data loss before getting home from an inspection:

“My dream for the future of inspections looks like this: I just finished inspecting a wind turbine. I pull my tablet out of my bag, I press send. And it’s already uploaded in Scopito, and the customer have the report from day 1. Then I’ll carry on to the next turbine on my schedule.

And that dream is one of the things that Danijel collaborates on together with Scopito CEO, Ken Falk, and his associated developers.

Danijel continues:

“The more we collaborate, the more quickly we will have a system that fits our needs. And a lot has happened already. When we started using Scopito, it was somewhat perfect for turbine blades, but not so much for the more technical parts of the turbine, like the gear boxes, where we needed more fields for description texts.”

A lot of the things that has since then been optimized in Scopito were apparently minor features, which matters a lot in ALL NRGs work processes.

“We e.g. needed more text boxes. Obviously, a report is more than just some images with comments on. We also want to note down e.g. what equipment we’ve used. We measure a lot of things, so it’s not just about images. We also need the option to attach a PDF file containing our conclusions. Scopito didn’t use to have this, but it does now.”

There’s still some development to be done before Scopito is running perfectly smooth for ALL NRG, and when that has happened, the great vision is that the two companies will work together on developing an app connected to Scopito, so that ALL NRG won’t have to do anything to move and store the data.

“Let’s imagine we’ve been to Mexico for one month, doing inspections on 50 wind turbines. And we get home – and the computer breaks down. Data is our foundation for everything we do, so that is a lot of money to lose. Because of this, we look forward to the day where we can just press “send” while on site and be certain that the data is uploaded and safely stored already.”

One reason why this vision is not possible yet, it that Scopito is a cloud platform, not an app. That means that internet access is needed to upload the data. And, unfortunately, internet is not abundant where wind turbines are placed.

Danijel also mentions automatic filled out text boxes as an example of a feature that will make creating reports easier in the future – but he considers the app that could give him the possibility to quickly and safely upload the data, already while in field, to be the most crucial.

“That is my vision, and time will tell if it will be possible, both technically and economically.”

Hopefully this case-study contributed to your understanding of how one significant company handles inspections and has sparked some thoughts and excitement for the technical evolution yet to come within the steadily improving field of wind turbine inspections.
